Nyepi Day

Friday, March 7th 2008 is a public holiday here in Bali as Hindus of Bali celebrate their new year or Nyepi day. Unlike any new year's day, Nyepi day is celebrated with silence, fasting and meditation. From 6.am until 6.am in the next morning, people of Bali will stay home and self-reflect. To help them have the right environment to self-meditate, people of Bali have four main restrictions to be carried out in Nyepi Day. These restrictions include no lighting fires (all lights must be kept low), no working, no entertainment and pleasure, and for some of the people who are really committed: no talking or eating at all.

Nyepi is not only for Hindu, non-Hindu residents also participate in this day of silence as well. This is done to show their respect for their fellow citizens. This restrictions also include tourists. They can still do whatever they want inside the hotel, but they are not allowed to go near beaches or streets, even the airport is closed the entire day. The effect of the Nyepi Day makes the busy and crowded streets and roads in Bali empty, there is no noise from radio or TVs, even inside the home there can be seen little activity. That is why Nyepi Day is also a mean for us to help fight global warming. A day of silence can be experimented all across the world.

To show our participation in this Nyepi Day, Suns.NET will be closed at 3 pm on the 6th of March, the entire day on 7th of March, and will be open as usual on 9 am the day after. For all Hindus we wish you a peaceful Nyepi Day, may this day bring joy and harmony to all human kind.
