Telkom Flash

PT. Telkomsel as Indonesia's largest telecommunication firm has launched a new internet connection called Telkom Flash. This connection uses the latest Wireless Broadband Technology or known as 3G. Anyone who has a 3G mobile phone can connect to the internet using this service. You just simply plug in your mobile phone to the computer using the data cable provided. I have tried this using my Nokia 6280 and it worked as a charm. You must first install the Nokia PC Suite. As soon as you connect your mobile it will detect the USB modem from your mobile. I have tried twice to connect to the internet using my mobile phone. Last night when I was connected I got 420.6 kbps, but just now I only got 116.2 kbps. So I think the bandwith you get is really depends on how many users are connected to the same Base Transceiver Station (BTS). To open a page with that kind of bandwith is heaven as the page will load in only 1 or two seconds. But the download speed is the same as ADSL broadband connection or even less. Usually using the ADSL connection, if I download a file from rapidshare with 100 megabytes in size it took 45 - 60 minutes. Yesterday when I tested the Telkom Flash connection to download a 69 megabytes file, it took 60 - 75 minutes. Using 3G connection you suppose to get up until 4 mbps of bandwith. So the connection is not really good for downloading files.

Telkom has offered two types of payment method, volume based and time based. If you are using a pre-paid Telkomsel such Simpati or AS then you will be able to use the volume based. You can choose to pay as you go with the rate IDS 350 per minutes, a 3 hours package for IDR 30,000 or a 24 hours package for IDR 100,000. You can find all the details for packages offered here. If you uses a post-paid Telkomsel SIM card such as HALO you can use the time based method. One thing that you must do before you can use the connection is to subscribe by sending a text message "flash" to 3636.

In conclusion, this internet connection service really useful for people who are mobile and in need of a fast internet connection anywhere they go. All that you need is a computer or laptop and a 3G mobile phone. You have to really think though for the best package you want to use.
